American Water Works Association - Minnesota Section

Water Utility Council

Purpose

To develop action programs to initiate, evaluate, respond and comment, within the framework of Section and Association policies, on legislative, regulatory and other matters which directly affect water utilities and to encourage provision of better water service to the consuming public.

Action Items/Tasks

  • Monitor, with the LMC, the impact of laws and regulations as they are proposed, developed, adopted, and implemented, and discuss and act where needed.
  • Assemble coalitions and encourage cooperative efforts with other organizations that share MN AWWA interests.
  • Continue to communicate the interests and concerns of the drinking water community to legislators and regulators utilizing the LMC where appropriate.
  • Encourage MN AWWA members to communicate with their Congressional representatives, State Legislative representatives, and with regulatory officials on drinking water issues.
  • Monitor and provide assistance to other agencies/organizations impacting water utilities, including Gopher-State-One-Call, the State Plumbing Board, the MN Water/Wastewater Agency Response Network (MnWARN), and others.
  • Work with the LMC to re-establish the Legislative Water Commission.
  • Meet with DNR on broader issues, such as water appropriation permits and procedures, water conservation plans, etc.
  • Monitor energy issues, activities of the Public Utilities Commission, and energy providers.
