American Water Works Association - Minnesota Section

Water Utility Council

Purpose

To develop action programs to intitiate, evaluate, repond, and comment within the framework of section and association policies on legislative, regulatory, and other matters that directly affect water utilities and to encourage provision of better water service to the consuming public.

Action Items/Tasks

  • Oversee section’s Strategic Plan Goal and Objective 5: Promote an effective legislative on regulator environment for the water community.
  • The Water Utility Council will meet with Craig Johnson from the League of Minnesota Cities (LMC) at the section annual conference to go over the legislative agenda.
  • Provide a speaker at the fall LMC conference to discuss infrastructure in Minnesota.
  • Appoint an active committee to maintain a utility presence on or within the Gopher-One State organization.
  • Contribute a committee to provide section/utility input during the development of guidelines for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) 10-year update requirements for Community Water Plans (Water Conservation and Emergency Plan).
  • Appoint a committee to meet with the DNR on broader issues, such as water appropriation permits and procedures, restrictive use of Mt. Simon aquifer, etc.
  • Have the LMC place an article in their newsletter on the laws change on closed meetings for security.
  • Develop a WUC attendance policy to promote active participation and monitor individual performance.
